Admissions to Delhi University shall no longer be tedious and exhausting as it used to be. The Delhi University (DU) administration on Monday proposed to do away with pre-admission Optical Magnetic Resonance (OMR) forms completely. This will mean that students of the general and Other Backward Classes (OBC) category will not have to apply to colleges at all, before the declaration of the cut-off percentages. However, students applying under other quotas (such as Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, military, freedom fighter, Kashmiri Migrant) will have to fill in a pre admission form.
College cut-offs will be declared directly by the university and then students apply to a course and college according to their marks.
This change was proposed in a meeting where all college principals were present, the vice chancellor and the university Registrar. The college Principals welcomed this change. Although, it still remains a proposal, it will have to be passed by the Admission Committee. Also, an official notification is expected shortly. Admission dates may also undergo changes as the proposal gets passed.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dinesh Singh assured that colleges will come out with five cut off lists to make sure that all seats are filled. He further added, “The process will become more transparent and efficient. It is much more student friendly as compared to the previous process.”
Previously for just 400 seats there were 20,000 applications. But now, this process shall be more convenient and also quite efficient.
Although the officials still maintain that it wouldn’t be a drastic change after the implementation of the proposal, there is just a change in the administrative point of view that makes it easier for the students.
Some principals also stressed that there might still be more application than the seats and then they won’t be able to refuse admission to the ones who filled the criteria. They feel quite uncertain with its functionality.
