Article-19 : Come join the Celebration of Freedom

Greetings from Article-19, the annual communication festival of Manipal Institute of Communication, Manipal University! This year, the fest will be held from February 16 to 18 and will feature three days of workshops, talks and screenings, together with the following events:

For the Express Awards, students are invited to send in entries in 10 different media categories, the details of which are mentioned below. The winners will be announced on the final day of the fest. Media Unconference will feature a panel discussion with eminent media persons on a current issue in the media, followed up by a no-holds-barred interaction with the audience.

Shot Cut makes its debut at this year’s fest as the ultimate test of creative vision. We invite short film entries of 20 seconds which will be screened during the fest. This year Article-19 is proud to host a stellar line-up of speakers including Kalpana Sharma, author and independent journalist;Shabnam Virmani, artist and director of The Kabir Project;Ishamuddin Khan, a traditional Indian street magician and representatives from Better Photography magazine and Indian chapter of NGO Greenpeace.

For registration, send in an email to a19reg@gmail.com with details of the category, name, name of institution, address, contact number and email address. Accommodation will be provided to the participants on prior information.
Last date for sending in entries: 8th Feb, 2012.

If you know a closet filmmaker, ghostwriter or any creative soul, please pass them this information.

Rules for Express Awards
General Rules:
• There are 10 categories for participation in the Express Awards.
• Accommodation will be provided for delegates. A19 will not bear the cost of travel.
• In every category, an individual is permitted to send in only ONE entry. An individual can send entries for any/all categories.
• TWO copies of each entry must be submitted on separate CDs/DVDs.
• Entries for different categories should be submitted on separate CDs/DVDs.
• All entries must be accompanied by a brief summary of the work (not more than 100 words).
• All entries should reach us by February 8, 2012.
• Only entries that have been produced after March 2011 will be considered.
• All works entered for the competition must be original.
• All CDs/DVDs must be labelled with title and running time.
• Entries in .jpeg format must be a minimum of 300 dpi.

Ad (Print) Express:
• Participants can submit a Print Advertisement on any theme.
• Participants must send in either commercial Ads or PSAs .Participants should submit TWO A3 sized printed copies, mounted on any mounting board with 2 cm clearance on each side.
• The entries must also be sent on a separate CD in .jpeg format.

Ad (TV) Express:
• Participants must submit a Television advertisement on any theme.
• Participants must send in either commercial Ads or PSAs.
• The Ad must not exceed 1 minute 30 seconds.
• For this category, the entries must be in DVD format, and should be submitted on DVDs ONLY.

Animation Express:
• Participants can submit works in Digital animation, Stop Motion animation, or Clay animation.
• The duration for the animation must not exceed 10 minutes.
• For this category, the entries must be in DVD format, and should be submitted on DVDs ONLY.

Documentary Express:
• Participants must submit a documentary film of 60 minutes (maximum) duration.
• The entry can be in any language.
• Entries in any language other than English must be accompanied by English subtitles.
• For this category, the entries must be in DVD format, and should be submitted on DVDs ONLY.

Film Express:
• Participants must submit a SHORT FILM of 20 minutes (maximum) duration.
• The entry can be in any language.
• Entries in any language other than English must be accompanied by English subtitles.
• For this category, the entries must be in DVD format, and should be submitted on DVDs ONLY.

Graphic Express:
• Participants must submit any digital art, based on any subject or theme.
• The entry can be designed on any software.
• Any photograph, if used, must undergo computer-aided graphic editing.
• Participants must submit TWO printed copies, mounted on any mounting board with 2 cm clearance on each side.
• The entries must also be sent on a separate CD in .jpeg format.

Photography Express:
• Participants must submit PHOTOGRAPHS based on the theme of ‘Life on the street’.
• EXIF data of the photograph must include date, time and camera model.
• Computer-aided digital manipulation of photographs will not be accepted.
• A one-line caption/interpretation of the photograph should be submitted along with the entry.
• Entries must not have any form of border, watermark, copyright or identifying mark.
• The organisers retain the right to use the photographs for display, in print or electronic form.
• Participants should submit TWO A3 sized printed copies, mounted on any mounting board with 2 cm clearance on each side.
• Entries must also be sent on a separate CD in .jpeg format.

Journalism (Print) Express:
• Participants must submit a news story or a feature story published in a newspaper or magazine.
• Publications in lab journals or in college or school magazines will not be considered.
• The entry must be in English.
• The participants must send TWO print outs of the story.
• Scanned copies of the publication must be included in the CDs/DVDs.
• Kindly note that the name of the publication must be clearly visible in the scanned copy.
• The entries on the CDs/DVDs should be in .doc format.

Journalism (TV) Express:
• Participants must submit a VIDEO NEWS FEATURE on any subject.
• The entry can be in any language.
• Subtitles should be provided in English for bytes in any language other than English and Hindi.
• The duration of the entry should not exceed 3 minutes.
• For this category, the entries must be in DVD format, and should be submitted on DVDs ONLY.

Radio Express:
• Participants must submit a Radio show production.
• This may include a news bulletin, radio magazine, radio drama or a radio promo, of not more than 15 minutes.
• A printed copy of the script should accompany the entry.
• The entries must be in .mp3 format ONLY.

Rules for Shot Cut
• Short films maybe filmed using any video capturing device, including mobile phone, iPod, digital camera, tablet computer etc.
• Entries must be limited to 20 seconds.
• No limit to number of entries from a participant. However a participant can win just one prize.
• Organisers reserves right to disqualify entries on the grounds of nudity, defamation, obscene language, violence and instigating communal hatred.
• Entries have to be submitted by 11:59 pm, 10th Feb 2012.
• Information of about the participant or the college cannot be a part of the film. It would lead to immediate disqualification.
• The judges’ decision will be final.
• The entries must be submitted through online file transferring web-sites only. For e.g. https://www.yousendit.com/
• The download link must be sent to a19reg@gmail.com, with name of the participant, college, name of the film and contact number.
