Blackberry still in a jam

Communication is the biggest weapon in today’s world. A country’s defense capability and connection with the outside world is majorly defined by how well connected with the world. Going by this, India is soon going to get crippled; coz we know about the controversy being raised over Blackberry.

Blackberry’s encryption technology is such that the data transmitted between BES and Blackberry phones is encrypted using advanced encryption standards. Private encryption keys are generated in a secure environment and are assigned to each BlackBerry user. Each key is stored only in the users secure and in his/her Smartphone. Data remains encrypted in transit and is never decrypted outside of the corporate firewall. The corporate world prefers blackberry services mainly due to its email services that have extreme privacy. And this very feature has become the bone of contention for security. Law enforcement and investigating agencies are demanding unlimited access, now this is a big headache. Further, the demand to ban BES is highly unreasonable and foolish.

If a technology is misused, it is not the technology’s fault. The law enforcement et al is simply trying to push the blame to the service. It will be highly ridiculous to say that if they uproot the secure service, they will be able to catch terrorists by the dozens. If our defence and security personnels choose to sleep over the other very evident loopholes in the system, it is really not someone else’s fault.

Blackberry is popular in North America, Europe and Asia. All these nations have frequently faced terror threats. But have they banned Blackberry? And surely the misplaced notion that other countries have been granted decryption facilities is entirely wrong. After all, what will Blackberry gain by doing so?

What happens ultimately is yet to be seen. Someone rightly commented on the issue today:

“Once you cut off India from the rest of the world by taking such foolish steps, terrorists will win their battle without even raising a gun!”
