Computers can read minds

Imagine you sitting in the bed and desperately wanting that cup of coffee….. But being too lazy to get up and fetch it…

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it…..

But, how about getting that cup of hot brewing coffee almost instantly as you think about it, without having to come out of bed…… Sounds like a mesmerizing dream doesn’t it…..

Similarly, imagine searching the internet simply by thinking…… exhilarating, isn’t it….

Dear friends, hold your breath, as your imagination may soon turn into reality….. The scientists claim to be developing a computer which reads human minds.

This pioneering research is voiced to be unlike the current brain-controlled computers which require users to imagine making physical movements to control a cursor on a screen. A team at Intel Corporation working on this technology, exclaimed that, this novel technology would be able to comprehend and interpret words as they are thought, thus blurring the line between humans and technology even further.

For this to be perceived in veracity, the scientists are creating detailed maps of the activity in the brain for individual words. These words can then be harmonized against the brain activity of the person accessing the computer, thereby allowing the machine to ascertain the word they are thinking.

To check the validity of this path- breaking innovation, some preliminary tests have been carried out. In fact, preliminary tests of the system have revealed that the computer can work out words by looking at similar brain patterns. The computer, merely by looking into for the key differences will have the ability to imply as to what the word might be.

On being asked about the principle behind the execution of this new technology, Dean Pomerleau, of Intel Laboratories explained that the computer uses a collection of about 20 questions to help in narrowing down as to what the thought word is. For example, a food related word like apple will generate activity in those parts of the brain associated to hunger. Using this, the computer can infer attributes to each word being thought about, hence enabling the computer to contemplate on what the word is pretty quickly.

Since it is only beginning to a whole new era of technologies, the scientists are therefore currently mapping out the activity that an average brain produces while thinking about different words.

This entails that one will be competent enough to write letters, open emails or do Google searches just by thinking…….  Let us hope that this technology is able to transcend new boundaries and overcome the problems, earlier encountered using brain-controlled computers. At the end, all I would say is….. WELCOME TO THIS NEW ERA…….

One Response to Computers can read minds

  1. Not even human beings are able to understand human mind fully and people are expecting a machine, which doesnt have a mind of its own and is practically dumb, to understand human mind. And we say that we are doing progress. . . .
