Delhi toh badnaam hui padi hai

I was reading an interview by Hindustan Times of men on the Delhi SlutWalk which is scheduled for tomorrow. And Javed Habib’s line : “Delhi toh badnaam hui padi hai” really hit me.

I was born and brought up in NCR. More than a Bengali or anything else, I thought I represent this city and this city represents me. It has always been a matter of pride to say that “I belong to Delhi”. Now every second day when my relatives call up and ask me “beta sab theek hai na?” I ask them, “why what could be wrong?” and they sound concerned that Delhi is no more safe for anyone, especially girls. I know you have heard that before (Delhi and its infamous women safety…), but why all of a sudden is Delhi in the limelight?

Yes, the number of rape cases and murders are high and yes women roaming around even in posh colonies feel scrutinized by unfriendly elements… but is there a reason behind all this?

Delhi is the place where people come from all over India for good jobs, a well settled family life….. a safe and secure future. Then what is it that has led to such a sorry state of affairs today? Despite the fact that the city boasts of the best Metro commute, great lush gardens, beautiful posh societies, world class institutes, major companies and a lot more; where is it that things have gone wrong?

  3. from my experience of staying in delhi and suburbs, and for the past four and half years in Ahmedabad, there is stark difference, its peaceful here and almost non existent crime rate, I have come back from the city to gandhinagar at 2:30 in the night on a truck, without any fear of being abducted, the news papers are not filled with stories glorifying crime and people don’t fear asking for lift from total strangers, I am not sure for this difference, could this have to do with mentality, psychie of the society and culture here, could it be because Mr Modi is awesome administrator, dunno, there are two G’s for me Ghaziabad and Gandhinagar totally opposite in everything from crime rate to development.
