A Dirty Picture

Dirty picture is a biopic based on Silk Smitha. It’s a story of a rebel who challenged the society that worshipped her secretly for her sexuality but was unwilling to accept her as one among them. It’s a slap on the face of the hypocratic society we live in because we are a society obsessed with sex and yet we are afraid to accept it publically. The movie depicts the societal mentality during that time which hasn’t undergone much change even today, of worshiping sexuality in the closets of their room and condemning it publically as if it’s a sin.

The word ‘sex’ is a taboo in a country which has a population of more than a million and is soon pegged to take over China to become the most populated country in the world. Silk Smitha wasn’t an accident in the Indian film industry but was a result of suppression of sex in the Indian society which had an outburst in the form of ‘SILK’ and mind you she was a phenomenon of her time.

There is something fundamentally wrong in our society, we ostracize people who express their sexuality and oppose sex education arguing it’s against our culture and yet there is sex everywhere you see be it in movies, ad commercials or for that matter even in news channels or newspapers. It has serious repercussions on the youth because neither are they taught how to deal with it nor do they have any means to talk it out except their peers who are equally ignorant.

This is evident from the fact that rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India with Delhi being the most unsafe city for women. Cases of molestation have become a regular occurrence. All these facts indicate towards one thing i.e. women are being viewed as sex objects in Indian society while paradoxically the same society  professes to worship women as goddesses and gives utmost respect to women.

Further, instead of punishing the rapists women are blamed for triggering rapes just because they wear skimpy clothes and provoke the so called “decent men” which is another instance of the hypocricy that exists in our society. However, the slut walks that were organized in Delhi and Bhopal by law students to highlight the cause of rape victims go on to show a slight change in our perception but a similar attempt by the students of National law school to organize a slut walk in Bangalore failed. The State police refused to grant permission citing security reasons. However, the main reason behind it was the opposition by some rightist parties who felt it is against Indian culture.

However, the same rightist parties who go about moral policing and “protecting Indian culture” are silent when it comes to women being raped and molested (may be they don’t think it is against Indian culture?).

Coming back to dirty picture, ‘dirty pictures’ are made because we are a dirty society! Movies depict the cultural and moral standards of the people in a country because 90% of the movies are made according to the tastes and preferences of the audience only 10% of the movies chose the untrodden path and try to change the tastes of the audience. The film industry will continue making ‘dirty pictures’ until we become a clean society
