The claims reflecting upon Congress’ surreptitiously offerring the Trinamool a financial package certainly elucidate that the former lays its reliance on the latter. Are we aware of this ongoing issue? Can We certainly remark on it? What in the holy name of support does a party really seek?
To sketch the issue that has boldy been enmarked above, it is of utter importance to one to be full fledgedly aware of the election-of-a-president. Is it WE who elect the president? Well, yes, though indirectly, it is WE who are responsible for election of a president through the votes that our MLA and MP cast.
The number of votes that an MLA has is based on the population of his/her State. Say, if the population of a State is P, then the very State’s MLA has votes that is numerically equal to P divided by number of MLAs divided by 1000. This certainly indicates that MLAs from larger states have more votes than those from smaller States.
Whereas, the number of votes that all the MPs have is equal. This results in a total of 1,098,882 votes in the electoral college that votes for the President and of the total number of votes, the winner needs at least 549,442 votes.
Of the cake of votes, UPA has 460,191, thereby it possesses around 42 percent of the pie of which Trinamool’s share is 4.4 percent i.e. 48,049 votes. If the Oppositon presents a candidate or backs the former Lok Sabha Speaker P. A. Sangma, the UPA candidate may win only if the very UPA is supported by Samajwadi Party, which has 6.2 percent pie of the cake , and Bahujan Samaj Party, which possesses 3.9 percent pie of the cake.
Meanwhile, if the Trinamool digresses from the UPA, the Congress would have to rely on four Left parties which have 51,682 votes. Thus, it could be seen that how a drift in Trinamool may lead to a clutter for Congress. Such a drift would certainly accentuate upon the Trinamool’s wish to not to continue in the UPA.
