DU new breed of daring Fuchchas…

It was day two for the fuchchas (the campus slang for freshers) in Delhi University (DU) and some of them have already learned the art of bunking. Spotted in Kirori Mal College (KMC) were three first-year girls — Nina and Diksha from Ramjas College and Lavanya from KMC. They spoke on the condition that we won’t disclose their real names for obvious reasons. “Today is the first day of our college, but look, we are bunking,” said Nina. “I’m loving it so much,” said Lavanya. “Diksha added, “We’re planning to bunk it tomorrow, as well as the day after.”
This daring bunking by freshers is indeed astonishing. It undermines the perceived image of young freshers as coy, nervous and vulnerable beings, not well versed with the ways of the campus, definitely not this quickly. Instead of trying to spend time with new teachers, interacting with seniors and bonding with fellow classmates, they are busy making full use of their new-found freedom, which was not possible in schools.

“Bunking is fun and OK once in a while,” said Dr Sumitra Mohanty, associate professor in Physics, KMC. “But students have to get down to the business if they have to make something of their lives.” The freshers are a smart lot. They have already seen it all. The campus is not a whole new world to them. During the admission season, they did their reconnaissance, or recce; saw the colleges, walked down the corridors and got themselves updated about the hangout zones.

“Yeh toh hamare bhi baap hai,” said Ankita Juneja, a second year student. “We were so shy on our first day, but these people come with so much confidence.” It is evident that DU’s new-generation fuchchas are better equipped in handling the pressures of their new life than their predecessors.

“No doubt, these freshers are very confident,” said Dr Mohanty, “and they are not afraid to face their peers.” Armed with brand new bags, shades and a cool attitude, the new breed in the campus is all set to take on the world.
