Fake OBC quota IIT aspirants back out

Students appeared for IIT JEE 2012: approx 5 lakh
Number of OBC students who got through: 4,085
Number of OBC students who requested transfer to General seats: approx 200
Number of OBC students who did not register for counseling: approx 600

This figure is about 500 more than last year. Reasons could be fake OBC claims or falling under creamy layer.

A warning was issued following some complaints from individuals, after the application process started, who called in to say many candidates who were claiming to be under the OBC category (non-creamy layer) did not belong to the category. The committee then cross-checked with the OBC Commission’s website and found it was true.

This year IITs have laid down very strict rules against fake OBC certificates. They have warned the aspirants that if such fake claims are found, they will barred from IITs for life. Fear of life ban might have caused one out of every six students who got through OBC quota to pull back.

There could be another reason though. This year it was proposed to raise the bar of non creamy layer to 9 lakh and 12 lakh for rural and urban centres. But this did not materialize. And the household income of less than 4.5 lakh pa (excluding salary from a government job and agriculture) are considered to be non creamy layer and are eligible for reservation. This confusion might have also led to more back outs.
