Book Review : FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelly

for nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose – a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.  but passion can be misleading and when realised in reality – horrendous.

This idea is what makes the crux of this novel by Mary Shelly called the “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” , a tale about a young man (R. Walston), on his voyage to unravel the secrets that dwell in the heart of the north pole, and another (V. Frankenstein) filled with indignation for an incredulous past which marks the sole purpose of his existence now.

Just like Prometheus once did, stealing fire from Zeus and giving it to the mortals, the sin of Frankenstein is no smaller in magnitude nor in its wickedness, for he creates an Ogre, a fiend abhorred by all, a creature so wretched in its appearance that its creator himself disgusts at the sight of it. In its quest for love, sympathy and compassion all it ever finds is hatred, melancholy and seclusion, and resolves to avenge its creator to whom he addresses – “Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even YOU turned from me in disgust?”, hence in its ruthless pursuit for revenge, it destroys what once was a happy, fulfilling and plentiful life of its creator, turning it into a life of a desolate man, of destitution and ignominy, and turning him into a man full of contempt for his deed which once was an ardor dream of his youth, his reverie and for which he toiled day and night so as to realize it in reality.

Through the supernatural storyline the author plunges into the extremes of human nature and discovers the importance of beauty, which is only skin deep, the desires and passions which are inherent in every mind and the craving for love and compassion for which every soul longs.
