Indraprastha College For Women had its Inter college fresher’s debate on 24th September, 2010 organised by the Debate Society of the college. The topic for debate was “This house suffers from memory loss”. A quite relevant and interesting topic to debate on!!
Freshers from various colleges from Delhi University took part in the debate. Students from each college spoke for and against the topic. It was great to hear the views of youngsters on various issues that do suffer from memory loss and how it impacts the society in more ways than one. The competition started with students speaking on matters such as how media today has forgotten their job of truth and how tabloid journalism has taken over serious news business. And we got to hear some contradictory views as well, the judicial system and how painfully slow it is in delivering verdict on major issues in the country and how media intervention is required to which the student speaking against the motion argued that India being a diverse country has its own challenges and it is a difficult task for the judiciary. Then some students spoke considering the “common people” as the house and how we elect criminals again and again. The most interesting debate certainly was where a student took politicians as the house and argued as how politicians suffered from a huge memory loss, all the promises made during elections are re-iterated in the next elections and nothing is ever fulfilled when the party is in power.
The current issues of Common Wealth Games and Ayodhya Debate were heard in almost every debate. Such competitions promote public speaking and helps in giving us an idea of how and what the youth today thinks. It was an occasion where some of the DU’s best speakers argued, debated and expressed their views regarding the society today.
