In conversation with the funnyman, Nitin Gupta

Nitin Gupta (Rivaldo) is the CEO of Entertainment Engineers. He is a Chemical Engineer from IIT Bombay famous for creating a Cult Play ‘Love In December’. A play which Subhash Ghai said could put most Bollywood Romantic Comedies to shame.

The reason is why he founded Entertainment Engineers with a simple mission, to make Stand Up Comedy respectable in India and to create a humor Renaissance in this country. Humor he says, ought to have an emotionality to it. We not only want people to laugh and think, we want them to LAUGH, THINK and FEEL at the same time. Nitin took to the Stage, College Festivals, Corporate Shows. And in a short span he has already enthralled the Audiences in some of the Biggest College Festivals in India, IITs, NITs, IIMs including their Alumini Meets. A Guest Speaker at various E- Cell Platforms and Marketing Conclaves. A TED Favorite. He is widely considered as the most Original Orators of present times.

Ishita :An engineer from IIT-B. How did you end up making people laugh?

Nitin Gupta:Well, this was something that I’ve always liked. I’ve always been shy. I thought the stage would help me overcome my shyness. That’s how I got into acting. Over time, I lost my inhibitions. But, I also realized that one is a different person on-stage and off it.

Anyway, all this worked out well. Gradually, I kept on improving and it developed. It was not love at first sight. It was love at second thought.

Ishita :So, did you never sit for placements?

Nitin Gupta :I did. And I even got one. But basically it was just to show my father that I was capable of getting a job. Once I got through, I told my father what I really wanted to do.

Ishita :Why did you turn down Laughter Challenge?

Nitin Gupta :I think, of late, it has become unsuitable for family viewing.

Ishita :What are the future plans for “Entertainment Engineers”?

Nitin Gupta :Right now, we’re doing stand-up acts, in colleges, in corporate events, in TED talks. We are also planning to get into advertising. A film is also on the cards this year. A small budget film.

Ishita :Is that film “Love in December”?

Nitin Gupta :“Love in December” won’t be our first project because it requires a lot of moolah. So, we’ll be working on a cheaper project first. It’s called “the Guy Next Door”.

Ishita :What is the structure of your organization? I mean, how do you employ people?

Nitin Gupta :Basically we are a group, like Indian Ocean, Euphoria etc. But the only thing is that we do other things too. Basically, anything related to entertainment. We have performers-myself, Vipul and Tushar. We do stage shows. Then we have people for logistics who take care of the research work. We hire directors on a freelance basis. The core organization is this much. The rest of the work is outsourced.

Ishita :What were the challenges that you had to face while setting up your venture?

Nitin Gupta :The main challenge was convincing my parents, since this was a very unconventional field. Rest everything fell into place.

Ishita :As a last question, one message you would like to give to our entrepreneurs.

Nitin Gupta :I would just say that entrepreneurship is like falling in love. There are no rules. You just have to pursue it relentlessly.
