India for Nobel boycott?

Filed under: Life & Style |

Unlike the past years, there might be a change, this time around for Nobel Peace Prize, held at Oslo City Hall on December 10, as India might not be attending the event. The reason: this year’s nobel is being conferred on the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

A little on the man: born 28 December, 1955 is a Chinese activist who called for democratic rights and the end of communist one party rule in Mainland China. As would have been expected, the man is serving his 4th term in jail and during this period, he had been awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”.

Russia and Pakistan have already agreed not to be the attendees in response to the Chinese government’s warning stating strain in bilateral relations with those who decided otherwise. The complicating factor for India in this respect comes from the fact that the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabo’s arrival which is just a few days after the Oslo function, might come in a jiffy if India did decide to attend the event. A statement released by the Foreign Ministry added that China “would like to cooperate with India to promote a sound and stable bilateral relationship”

  1. China has also kept his wife under house arrest, also it has banned an artist Al Weiwei and an economist Mao Yushi from travelling abroad; both are Liu’s supporters. Meanwhile the Nobel might be awarded to two empty chairs symbolising the husband and wife….

      • What resources? There was a time when newton and einstein made path breaking discovires on a simple experiment table. today everyone needs hyper sophisticated instruments and world class facilities to make one minor new discovery.

Talking about resources, there is no dearth of investment from government side. It is teh attitude that brings the difference. The red tapism and easy going attitude will be the end of Indian Scientists.

  6. What I think like is….There should be a refinement in the members of Nobel Committee i.e representative from each nation should be there in the committee and voting process should be done.(one vote each)

If Nobel prize means such high dignity then the selection and awarding criterion must be revised ,why leave this job to some Norwegian politicians? ……Just because it was initiated by some Norwegian….i don’t think so.
