Last week’s release is a film about family–well that’s one topic we rarely get to see on silver screen. Yes I am talking about “We are Family”– an insight into modern Indian family, directed by Siddharth Malhotra. No doubt it is by a filmmaker who is known to make family sagas, films which are big with big star casts, great songs, and lavish sets and yes big return at the box office, Karan Johar.
Over the last decade he is arguably one director to have churned out blockbusters. Johar debuted with Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, a romantic comedy in 1998 which won several accolades and set the cash register ringing. India got its new age young director who was very soon going to make Indian films popular worldwide. He thereafter directed another blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a family saga which created waves in both national and international markets. He hardly fails to impress people. His films apart from doing well in India does exceptionally well across the globe. From making candy-floss romantic films which rocked the nation he went ahead and made Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna-a romantic drama film about extramarital affairs.
Karan Johar is surely the one who took Indian films outside India and coined a whole new word, “overseas” markets for Indian films. A big example being his most acclaimed film released earlier this year, My name is KHAN- a film on post 9/11 prejudice were the songs weren’t lip sync and the hero was autistic and with the best romantic pair, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol as lead actors. MNIK not only won the hearts of the film lovers but also the critics and yes set the box office on fire being the second biggest grosser of all times and highest grosser ever overseas. From tying up with Fox Star Studios and releasing MNIK in countries like Egypt and France after decades, truly Karan Johar needs to be appreciated for making films which are loved worldwide.
After directing most successful films of Indian cinema Karan’s Dharma Productions branched into producing films ranging on various topics made by young debutant directors. It takes utter courage to invest the hard bucks and have a good amount of faith on a newcomer (especially when your entity has reached a certain level). If we go by the records the audacious & maverick filmmaker holds, the number of young directors he’s given break in his esteemed Dharma Productions, is astonishing. And whoever came under his influence became a brand in itself. Be it blockbuster KAL HO NAA HO, super hit film DOSTANA a comic caper, WAKE UP SID which became a huge hit among the youth, critically acclaimed KURBAAN or the recent hit I HATE LUV STORYS or the latest venture WE ARE FAMILY, all have been directed by new comers, young talented directors. Dharma productions have definitely something going right for them!!
Now, all eyes are on his latest venture “We are family” official adaptation of the Hollywood hit Stepmom starring Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, a subject dealing with family and can a house be run by two women? Well that’s one genre Dharma is unbeatable at!! Yes, the hype around the film has been great, reviews are positive, people are coming out of theatres with wet eyes and it is expected to draw the family audience, as it is a clean entertainer. So, let’s see what magic Kjo (as he is fondly called) weaves this time!!!!!

His lavish sets, his dialogue ,large starcast, not just new directors but new actors, clothes in his films which bcome fashion but also raise happy hours of discussion on the weather of a particular scene , how one character will stand out by mannerism like sikh boy in kkhh, poo in kkkg, kantaben of khnh,pc’s auntie in dostana, laxmi eternally dieting friend of wus and so on..all of these r kjs brand.
Good start and good luck to you…
