The Indian born Ghazal King, Mehdi Hassan passed away at Karachi, making his fans solitary. He died on Wednesday, following multiple organ failure at the age of 84.
Hassan who had millions of fans in India and Pakistan, had been admitted to a private hospital in Karachi, some days ago. He had been in serious condition.
“My father has been ill for the last 12 years but this year his condition has deteriorated significantly and in the last one month he was released from hospital for just one day before being admitted again.” Arif Hassan told PTI, a few days back.
Indian legend Lata Mangeshkar, while talking to Express News, said that she was deeply saddened to hear the news of Mehdi Hassan’s demise.
He was born on 18th July, 1927 in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India in the family of Musicians; later after 1947 his family transmigrated to Pakistan.
He was envisaged to be one of the most prosperous Ghazal singers of India and Pakistan. Mehdi Hassan was trained in Classical music by his Musician family. His father Ustad Azeem khan and Uncle Ustad Ismail khan were both well respected classical musicians. He tried various styles of music and there was a time in Pakistan’s film industry known as Lollywood when a production was considered meager without his voice.
His Ghazal like “Ankhon se mili Ankhe”,”kaaha gai wo wafa” will leave a mark in his fans’ hearts.
He will always missed by all of us.
Hassan leaves behind a legacy, a treasure trough of beautiful melodies. As he himself sang:
ab ke hum bichhade to shaayad kabhii khwabon mein milen jis tarah suukhe hue phool kitaabon mein milen
aaj ham daar pe kheenche gaye jin baaton par kyaa ajab kal vo zamaane ko nisaabon mein milen
