“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” – these wise words by William Congreve stand true to reason.
New York City witnessed the fury of Kritika Biswas, an 18-yr old, daughter of the Vice Counsel at the Indian Consulate in Manhattan, Mr. Debashish Biswas, was arrested on false charges of sending obscene messages to two of her High School teachers in Queens’ John Browne High School. Now, she is suing the city for $1.5 million. What makes this case weird is that she was arrested on the basis of a pre-mature investigation and almost no evidence !
Two teachers (the gym teacher and the calculus teacher) from her school had been receiving offensive messages since a few days, which were rumoured to be sent by a student. The IP address was traced and it belonged to ‘one of the systems’ in Kritika’s building. Since she was the only student having French as her second subject choice so it was very conveniently assumed that she was the one sending those messages. The case smells of foul-play throughout and now that Krittika has been proven innocent, the NYPD has some serious questions to answer. It’s amusing to see how ones nationality determines the degree of severeness by which ones case is treated in US. Kritika also claims that the culprit, a Chinese boy had been just suspended and didn’t have to go through the atrocities she was made to.
This kind of incident is bound to scar one’s memory. She also claims to have been treated in a wrong way; and then there are accusations
of not letting her go to the bathroom, the blanket being too dirty and the water-cooler having vomit all over (okay, that’s something I do not advocate for, neither would I say she deserves sympathy for “spending the night with prostitutes and HIV patients”). The question that arises here is why wasn’t the case investigated further and why was the arrest made and neither her father nor the Indian Consulate was informed of it ! And contrary to what is being said, it is a fact that the girl was entitled to diplomatic immunity. Forget about diplomatic immunity, this is no way to treat a teen-aged girl ! At the same time, demanding money would not be the solution. She could ask for an apology and a severe punishment for the culprit but asking for money would not solve the purpose.
However, this is not the first time such questions are being raised. A couple of months earlier, Meera Shankar, the Indian ambassador to the US was subjected to a pat down at the Jackson Evers airport. I understand the security protocol, but what I don’t get is why there’s a need to be racial about everything ? It can never be said that a person will be loyal to his own country but is taken for granted that immigrants are bound to pose a threat, no matter what !
Picture this: Someone calls the cops and reported an incident. Imagine yourself to be one of the responding cops. A teacher says that he or she’s receiving these threatening e-mails and they have French in them. One of my students speaks French so it must be her. The point to be noted is that no cop in his or her right mind would make an arrest on that flimsy, baseless association.
There’s clearly more to what we see. The kid who has admitted to sending the mails should be arrested and prosecuted. Also, if he said that he was Kritika then he should be charged with identity theft as well. Some unruffled feathers indeed need to be ruffled here.
