Marissa Mayer – The Lady Who Jumped from Google to Yahoo!

Google Veteran Marissa Mayer Takes Over at Yahoo

Marissa Mayer was appointed the new Yahoo President and CEO on July 17, 2012 and already, within the short time span, she is making big news. Among the big changes we have observed, it includes the exit of top official Ross Levinsohn. The lady who is formerly a Google executive might just drive Yahoo towards Google-ism , or so we expect!

Looking at some fun changes she introduced at the workplace

  • Free Lunch at the company’s URL café (yey!)
  • She is also working on revamping Yahoo’s office layout to give a more collaborative working environment

On the work front, Marissa has introduced Weekly All Hands Meeting, which will be held every week on Fridays. These meetings are now being termed as Friday FYIs. Another change inspired from Google is the new QA tool being implemented. Using this, anyone can post questions, ideas and suggestions at the Internet giant and these will be then voted up and down. This system will also take care of Executive Accountability and leaks.

One of the biggest challenges faced by Marissa would be giving Yahoo a clear direction. The internet, mobile, laptop market is increasingly being dominated by Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon. So will Yahoo be able to find a niche which it could dominate? Will we finally hear someone say Yahoo!?
Mayer is definitely going to make use of her experience at Google. We can already see that most of the surface changes introduced are emulated from Google. But there is no harm in some safe game changers.

Before Google took over internet, it was Yahoo that was most popular. Some people still say they prefer Yahoo messenger over Google Chat or any other. Now their once dominant Search Engine is a mere 13% of the market.

Marissa Mayer, you surely have a Herculean task ahead!

Till then, Yahoo!
