MBBS seats go up by 380 this year ‎

To furnish a smile on the faces of medical seat aspirants, an additional 380 seats are up for grabs for MBBS for the academic year 2012-13, increasing the number of medical seats available in the state to 5,935.

ESI Medical College, Bangalore, with 100 seats and Tadikele Subbaiah Trust, Shimoga, with 150 seats are two newly opened new medical colleges in Karnataka, others being Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore (increase of 50 seats), Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore (up by 30) and Navodaya Medical College, Raichur (up by 50 seats).

The tally: government seats 1,350; ComedK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges- Karnataka) 1,545; KRLMPCA (Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minorities Private Colleges’ Association) 1,460; and deemed universities 1,580.

For Karnataka Examination counseling, for which the verification is in progress, about 2,222 seats are available. Students will have 914 seats to choose through ComedK counseling, 1,084 through KRLMPCA and 1,428 through deemed universities, besides an all-India quota.

The number of BDS seats, of which 875 are government seats, will remain the same at 2,990.

UPGRADING COLLEGES

The government has proposed to the Center that all medical colleges be upgraded into research centers. The project is worth Rs 1,275 crore. The state has suggested a ratio of 80: 20 for the sharing of funds. The state has also proposed that a trauma and disaster management center be introduced on the lines of AIIMS Delhi. This project is worth Rs 280 crore in Bangalore Medical College.

It has also proposed that an increase in intake at Mysore Medical College, KIMS, Hubli, and Bellary Medical College be done. An increase in seats for clinical PG programmes has also been sought. The proposal to start a hospital management PG course in medical colleges has been submitted to the finance department.

The counselling dates have been arranged such that seat blocking is impossible. Last year, there were many instances of students from Rajasthan, Bihar and Delhi submitting fake marks cards. This time at the ComedK counselling centre, a government representative, a legal adviser and police officials will be present. A single man monitoring committee will oversee the process. P Venkataramaiah, former V-C, Kuvempu University, will be the member. There will be complete transparency in all the counseling.
