March 15, 2011: SC directed the SIT to probe into alleged complicity of the Narendra Modi administration in the riots because of a mismatch between its findings and inferences. Mismatch were like for instance the SIT did not recommend that any of the high-ups be booked for destruction of evidence even after it had acknowledged the charge made by the complainants, Zakia Jafri and Teesta Setalvad, that vital records pertaining to the riots had been destroyed to shield the culprits.
April 11, 2011: PC Pandey, who had been commissioner of Ahmedabad in those disturbed times has now submitted a 3000 page scanned copy of reports to the Special Investigating Team. These reports had apparently been “destroyed” back then.
April 20, 2011: Setalvad in a letter to Malhotra urged the SIT to exercise caution in dealing with the evidence produced by Pande, who, after his stint as commissioner of Ahmedabad in 2002, went on to become DGP of Gujarat and is now, after his retirement from IPS, chairman of the state police housing corporation.
April 23, 2011: Mr. Modi addressed a huge public gathering on the outskirts of Palanpur town in North Gujarat on Saturday but his usual ebullience was missing. In his address at Palanpur, he said Gujarat would soon emerge as a power-surplus State. He said the fruits of his government’s long-term planning in the last 10 years would be reaching the people in the next few years.
He made no reference to the on-going turmoil over his alleged remarks against Muslims.
Questions: Is this Pandey’s turning into a new leaf, or saving his ass act?
Does Modi think he will get away so smoothly?
A person responsible for death of 58 (who were burnt alive) 790 + 254 (killed in resulting riots) and more 223 missing cases, can actually be a “representative” of the people? Is this our democracy? This is what People Power all about?
On one hand we are all gung ho about corruption and all that and on the other hand, we can sit at homes and see this happen.
What can we do: Get out of your comfy homes and VOTE next time………

well said. it is our fault to a grt extent. we only let them take control.
gujarat riots is one of the saddest events in the history of india. its really tragic that an indian (the cm) let the blood of fellow indians flow like this.
I just dont get the last part of the article,’Get out of your homes and vote…’. Modi got elected because people voted him in,rite? So are you trying to say that people chose the wrong person? And how is he responsible for the 58 who were burnt alive?
the very reason why we have the wrong men as the reps is because we do not vote for the right ones. He has many a times openly made anti muslim remarks. That he took next to no action to stop Hindus from killing the Muslims is a less openly talked about fact.
Not only Modi tried to water down the seriousness of the situation, but Modi also implicitly justified the killings of Muslims, and failed to condemn the attacks on them.
If u interact with the people in gujarat, you would find that many ppl, while condemming the acts of violence during the riots, still support Modi wholeheartedly. Thats because he is a brilliant administrator. He has practically changed the whole state of gujarat in his short stint. However we can also see the changed perception of the gujaratis, as congress has been gaining steady support in many areas of gujarat, while the support on Modi has been declining.

The deaths could have been far less if the authorities had taken things under control, or at least tried to
