2012 seems to be an amusing and trying year for students all across the country. But this one news may bring a smile to some faces.
NTSE will now be conducted for class X students instead of class VIII students. NTSE , the National Talent Search Examination is held each year at two levels – state and national. Students are selected on basis of their performance in the exam and awarded scholarship for their student life until post graduation. The pattern has been changing since its inception. Briefly here are the changes
Now class 10 students will only be eligible for the NTSE
The amount of scholarship is Rs 500/- per month for all the students studying in Class IX onwards (irrespective of the class/course) except for Ph.D., wherein it is paid as per UGC norms.
The scholarship amount is being changed to Rs 4000/- from 2013. [undecided]
Till 2008 the exam was for class 10 students and was changed to be for class 8 in that year only. So we can see that NTSE has an ever changing exam pattern. Here are the broad points about NTSE Selection Process will consist of two stages – The First Stage is conducted at State/UT level. Those who qualify this round will appear for Stage II exam conducted by NCERT. Scholarship will be awarded to 1000 students. The amount of scholarship will be Rs 500 per month.
The fees for applying to Stage I exam varies as per state/UT. For stage II, no fees are applicable.
The Important Dates are as follows
Stage I (State)

Examination in Mizoram, Meghalaya,Nagaland and Andaman and Nicobar Islands: 17th Nov 2012

How to Prepare for NTSE 2012
The thumb rule is, NCERT is your bible! Whatever syllabus you follow for NTSE (there is none prescribed as such by CBSE), just be sure that you are through with NCERT.
A number of schools provide support / extra classes to help their students prepare for NTSE specifically. But do not be disheartened if your school is not one of them, these classes only help you prepare for the exam pattern. That you can do yourself by getting sample papers and sitting in a mock test environment at home and giving them. A number of downloadable mock test papers and sample papers are available today. You can also find NTSE sample papers with answers.
Some students and teachers suggest that while preparing, concentrate on the smaller details. Though NTSE is not in general rigorous in terms of lengthy questions or those that ask you to mug up every word of the book, on the contrary they test your ability to pick up the subject in a more unique fashion. Trust your grasping power more than your mug-up-then-spill-the-answer power!
