Latest Update 19:00

  • Congress trying to get Pranab elected unopposed. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati commit support. PM phones leaders of all major parties.
  • Left says it will get back to the UPA.
  • BJP also open to supporting Pranab, particularly since Dr APJ Kalam does not want to run against him. BJP may ask for its own person as Vice-President in exchange for supporting UPA candidate.

With the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for July 19, the country has been draped in a discombobulated state. The counting of votes will be taken up on July 22. As till June 13, a stoic silence has pervaded the circumference of Congress as its choice for the candidate was awaited by one and all.
Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee arrived to Delhi a day after her Finance Minister Amit Mitra, in order to seek a financial package for West Bengal in exchange for the Trinamool’s support for the Congress’ Presidential candidate, met Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. It was reported by the sources in the Congress that Ms. Banerjee had been invited by Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss the above highlighted issue. The meeting was meant to be a milestone in Gandhi’s efforts to frame a political consensus on a candidate.

The proposition under the banner of financial package was conveyed to Ms. Banerjee after Mr. Mukherjee had notified Mr. Mitra about the same. To add to an exclamation, Congress Spokesperson Manish Tiwari refused to agree that such a thing could ever have happened. Also, for Ms. Banerjee, a flamboyant bailout would pave the path for her salubrious political future as her State had been facing the deep despair of debt when she came to power a year ago.

Believed to be a pro-Trinamool, Channel 10 in Kolkata projected the fact that Ms. Banerjee was inclined to prefer the former Lok Sabha speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, to Mr. Mukherjee.

As yet, the United Progress Alliance allies, including the DMK, the NCP and the Rashtriya Lok Dal lay on a firm ground to back Mr. Mukherjee if he gets nominated by the

Congress. On the other hand, Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav stands on a strong ground of certainty by highlighting that he would prefer a politician to make his way to the very Rashtrapati Bhavan.

With this, the utter confusion awaits Ms. Banerjee’s choice which would be presented very soon.
