So here it is Ra.One, the biggest or whatever I should say mightiest movie in Bollywood history. Filled with large amount of specialeffects, the movie has brought to Bollywood what we generally we saw in Hollywood’s superhero films. Ra.One has it’s own pros and cons. I’m not a big SRK fan but with Ra.One he has done commendable job.
The plot is SRK plays Shekhar Subramanium who works a video game company. He lives with his wife Sonia (Kareena) and is not compatible with his son Prateek. He starts designing a game with very powerful villain (because his son thinks villains are kick-ass). Problem starts when the game’s villain starts thinking on his own and when Prateek defeats him he wants vengeance. He comes out to the virtual world with help of a technology developed by Shekhar’s company. He kills Shekhar and goes for his son. As Prateek understands his father was killed by Ra.One he goes to revive G.One the game’s hero. G.One protects Prateek and Sonia, disintegrates Ra.One and takes his HART (his source of power). Sonia, G.One and Prateek go to India. Ra.One follows them their and captures Prateek and Sonia. G.One saves Sonia and then goes to fight Ra.One to save Prateek. They both kill Ra.One but G.One sacrifices himself so that Ra.One could be completely finished. The films ends with Prateek successfully reviving G.One’s HART as G.One reintegrates on the roof of the house.
For me, I generally don’t see Bollywood movies on first day, but sci-fi superhero film bought me in. Everyone had a lot of expectations from Ra.One, but for some it was good effort but many of them didn’t like it. For me I already knew the film won’t fascinate me much as per my large sci-fi film history. The main thing I liked was action sequences were filmed in a very proper way to give an adrenaline rush. The counterpart special effects were also best and comparable to what we see in Hollywood movies. The main problem was story, which wasn’t strong enough. The script became lousy as it continued. Arjun Rampal’s role was hyped very much but he had a very small screen time. One more thing, the villain’s motive was also small, generally non-human villains want to conquer the world but here he just wanted to kill a boy, but that’s a minor issue.
The film, for me creates problem when you start mixing “naach-gaana” and “romance” in a superhero with a wrong timing. G.One which is computer generated has shown extra emotions which was conceptually wrong. This reminds me of excellent work Rajnikaanth did in “Robot”.
However no one must be blamed for above melodrama. Because this is my point of view and I am a part of what people say “intelligent” or “technical” audience. The sci-fi fans simply won’t like that, but they here are minority, the majority being people who come out after seeing Ra.One and say “ye to superhero hain, hame to DDLJ wala Shahrukh chahiye tha” (god help us). Yes, I am talking about typical Indian audience. In the end if a Rs170 cr movie cannot gather them, the movie will surely go down. Maybe if I could catch the international version of Ra.One with these things deleted!!
Speaking from a neutral point of view, Ra.One might the first one of it’s kind and can be considered as birth of sci-fi superhero films in India. With all effects, setups, suits it’s a complete package. Then there are car scenes and pulling out a train in between the road, these things are not much available in Indian cinema and more importantly they aren’t easy to do. So the whole team here has done a very good work and with 3D it gets better!
Check out Ra.One Behind the scenes
It is true magic created on screen. The visual effects have set set a bench mark for even hollywood films. Its the best movie of the century! I loved it!
