Single. Un-safe. Easy?

Girls in Delhi are not safe. This straight forward articulation consists of pain, torment, insecurity, vexation, vulnerable life of a girl. Some says a girl is not safe at night, I say she is not even safe in morning. She always needs a guard, even in morning. Recently it ensued with my friend at most crowded place of Delhi, Chandni Chawnk, She was there for solitary shopping, and a guy tantalized her. She contravened a local police officer about the situation, his statement was even more exasperated and full of insecurity, he didn’t help my friend, instead he cross questioned “What do you think you are doing alone in Chandni Chowk? In such a crowded place what can police do anyhow?!” Out of 80,000 police officers in Delhi Police, only a few are visible on roads, a paltry situation. It’s actually pestering. It’s not just one incident; there are many incidents that manifest Delhi police are not vigilant about women’s security. Like recently incidents of blitz on women through blades were reported but most of them were not arrested. Polices postulated most of these incidents are “crime of passion” and now accused is victim.

After the recent study, it’s not so shocking that at least one women has been desecrated every day and 42 rapes as an average per year in the capital. These disturbing numbers continue to abide Delhi despite affirmation from the top cops and Chief Minister about increased hub on women safety. You must point that 25% of the 500 murders victims in Delhi are women. Then what to do with such assurance when there is no positive aftermath?

A recent survey ranked India as the fourth most vulnerable place for women, and in India, Delhi ranks the first. There is a reason behind such discernment, According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the capital scores for over 47% of rape in urban India. For women in Delhi, fear is a immutable counterpart and rape is the bizarre they may have to confront at every corner, on any road, in any public place, at any hour. After the social and economic Independence of India, women are still not independent in terms of fear, and insecurity.

Delhi is even more unsafe as compared to Gurgaon, Ncr. A poll of women in both places exposed that two-thirds of women feel erratic in these multi-national cities. But the situation of Delhi is more contemplative, 70% of Delhi women feel unsafe as compared to Gurgaon’s 65%. The clear preponderance shows Delhi women’s are more unsafe. The poll is not based on cloudy perspicacity, every girl feel the same uneasiness of menacing. Most of the women travel carrying safety pins and pepper spray for their security. It’s funny! But it’s important for each women to safeguard her own security.

What made the criminals more robust? The interpretation is even complicated. According to NCRB data, only 10% of rape cases are filed by the victim women. We want justice, but we don’t want any kind of prevalence. In 2003, there were 15,847 rapes, of which women between the ages of 18 and 30. More lamentably, 81% of the cases are still pending consideration.

Dress code to women & girls, clean chit to rapists?

Self defense and women

When the call-centre worker was abused in Delhi, the major question was why the police did not able to help, her friend called within five minutes for help, and what was PCR van parked nearby doing?? Police clarified: Why was she walking in an unsafe area at 2 in the night?

When the student from Mumbai University was raped, the question imitated a uniform mentality. And when an employee of cell phone Company in Jaipur was almost raped by four men, it was the similar statement again. Why she was eating and drinking alone at a restaurant in a conservative country.

The country is not conservative, but the thinking of people is. They can’t think the image of women more than a House-wife. The India is developing but only by infrastructure not by thinking. The thinking of people is as same as it was 100 years before. We girls need freedom from this male dominating society and thinking. Now you answer who is victim? A boy with his pride of manhood or an Abused women?
