SOCIAL NETWORKING – A Boon or A Bane ?

When was the last time you decided to take a stroll in the park on any of the fine evenings ? As many would say, once in a while. If we were to compare today’s generation with the previous one, we would find that the previous generation was far fitter and stronger than us.
Why ? Because of the latest impact of the technology especially the Internet in our lives.

Let me explain. We are glued to our mobile and desktop screens for most part of the day usually engrossed in social networking on Facebook or Twitter, such that it has become a worldwide addiction. And social networking sites are not only to blame. Often nowadays, netizens, as they are widely referred to as, prefer to do their shopping, buying groceries and other stuffs completely via internet.

Sure, technology has ushered into a new revolution and made our lives easier, but it has got its negative aspects as well. And we often choose to overlook these negative aspects and the side-effects of technology. Sooner or later, the realization is going to hit us ! Nowadays, you can easily find kids, below the age of 13 having full-fledged accounts on these social networking sites, most of the time they are playing online games when they should be playing outside in streets and parks. People may claim that Facebook has brought families and friends closer but in reality, it has only increased the distance between them.

How often do you interact with a person who appears online the whole day ? Are you obsessed to Get more Facebook likes? And then there’s Twitter, where we have almost every Twitter fan hanging on to every word of the tweets belonging to popular celebrities also known as the Twitterati. Often misunderstandings crop up and a huge issue is made out of it. Who can forget the IPL Kochi scandal that erupted last year because of a certain Lalit Modi tweet? It even led to the sacking of Shashi Tharoor as a MP from the Cabinet in the government.

All in all, we must learn to harness the power of the web for our needs instead of misusing it. Parents often have a pet peeve about their teens being hooked to the net and ignoring their family relations. Sadly, this global phenomenon shows no sign of slowing down in the near future. We have more new networking sites such as the Google Plus project which just launched recently, making its way into the lives of a million net users all over the world. As a result, cyber crimes have increased to a large extent where user accounts, databases and websites are hacked into and viruses spread all over the net. How often have you received spam mail in your account or on your wall? There’s a need to educate people, especially youngsters, about cyber security. After all, we live in a real world, not in a virtual one. And it ought to remain that way, if we are to make the world a better place to live in.
