The Midas Touch is strong in Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan; is it the Khan factor?
Talaash not only earned good reviews and an addition to the fan following for Aamir Khan, but has also earned pretty well in the first weekend itself - Rs. 13.5 crore (Friday) , Rs 15.5 crore (Saturday) and Rs 18.1 crore (Sunday) summing up to Rs 47.1 crore in the weekend overall. The movie has broken 3 Idiots record which had earned Rs 40 crores in the the first weekend back in 2000. It seems evident that the movie starring Aamir Khan, Kareena kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui will easily cross the 100 crore mark. Already two of Aamir Khan’s movies Ghajini and 3 Idiots are in the 100 crore club. Talaash was made in a budget of Rs 40 crores and Reema Kagti (director) had sold the satellite rights for this bollywood movie for 40 crores too.
But no one can beat Salman Khan ( we will not call him Sallu Bhai anymore after his explicit statement that he does not like being called that everyone!). Dabangg 2 we hear has sold it’s satellite rights at a whopping Rs 180 crores. That is definitely the biggest amount ever, coming second to Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One that was sold at Rs 137 crores. ‘Dabangg 2′ gets the highest opening for a non-holiday release
Jab Tak Hai Jaan created a frenzy worldwide and will soon cross the 200 crore mark. After the completion of second weekend screenings, the JTHJ earnings stood at Rs 110 crores in India and Rs 62 crores overseas, adding up to Rs 172 crores in all. We see an elite 200 crore club forming soon.
Though many in the Bollywood world and media claim that the 100 crore club et al are not a good parameter to judge the film, but like it or not, movie and entertainment industry is a business which does focus on money – making. Some directors and actors are successful in conveying messages and fulfilling a larger purpose while they do so, while some movies are purely for entertainment.
