Have you ever experienced the joy of giving, and realized that sometimes it can be the biggest source of happiness, much bigger than receiving anything? Have you always had an altruistic streak which is waiting to come out and be used for something worthwhile?
If yes, well then you are welcome to the Teach India program, initiated by the TIMES OF INDIA group, Aamir Khan being its brand ambassador.
I have also been quite like you, wanting to do something for the society on a whole, but never found something which can interest me enough to contribute in a substantial way.
But then I came across an internship proposal for Teach India program via the Campus Placement Cell of my college. This program is truly wonderful, aiming to teach English language to people belonging to age group of 18-32 years. It is rather unique also, as volunteers have to teach English language, and not all subjects like Maths, Science etc. which can become cumbersome for volunteers. The program aims to make the underprivileged of the age group 18-32 years familiar with English in order to improve their communication skills.
I personally believe it will not only benefit the people who receive the English education , but the country and economy as a whole, as it will open up many employment opportunities for these people who otherwise would not have a chance at performing in these jobs without English language familiarity. As a result, their bargaining power, and hence wage levels will tend to go up.
Moreover, it will benefit their future generations immensely, as English educated parents will learn the value of school education and will not refrain from sending their children to school.
The course is structured such that each volunteer has to devote 2 hours a day for 3 weeks, for 100 days. Prior to this, they will receive an 8 day formal training by British Council experts, which will in turn enhance the teaching capacities of volunteers.
The structure looks highly appealing to me, not only because it will provide great working experience , but mainly because it will provide me great amount of satisfaction, happiness to help underprivileged, and make a difference to the society. Devoting 72 hours for a good cause is not a big deal, especially when these 72 hours have the potential to bring about a great difference.
As for me, I have filled my application for the next cycle commencing from August-October, and looking forward to my 72 hours of happy teaching. If you feel the same, you can check their website http://www.itimes.com/public_teach-india.php
Let’s Teach India. Let’s make a difference.
