Starting from this post, every week I will do my countdown of the Top 20 science fiction books. This list is my own and I welcome people to share their thoughts on these books if any.
The book No.20 ” The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein” is one of the most weird books I have ever read. When I started reading the book I was rather taken aback by the writing style. It’s not conventional and that’s a huge understatement. I have never really encountered a writing style where the author has been this flippant with the use of his words. I had to check whether I had purchased the real book!
As always I will write down what is written behind the book, after all that summary is probably the best since it was meant to sell it!
“On Luna- an open penal colony of the twenty-first century-a revolution is being plotted. The conspirators are a strange assortment: an engaging jack-of-all-trades, his luscious blonde girlfriend, and a lonely talking computer. Their aim: the overthrow of the hated Authority. But things don’t go according to plan, and their independence may ultimately prove harder to maintain than it was to seize…”
So that’s that. Now my opinion on the book!
This book as I said is one of the most weird ones I have ever read. The first few pages were a real chore. The grammar is shot to hell, the words are made up versions of words we use or Loony talk, and for weeks after reading this one my grammar was littered with errors. But to hell with all that because this book is brilliant. Sure it begins on a pure sci-fi note and sure it takes place on the moon, but soon enough the author is dealing with matters much more serious. The book is a discussion of political philosophies, marriage rules, freedom, justice, law, life! The author has somehow managed to discuss both liberal and closed off ideas in this book. The protagonists are all very opinionated, representing different opinions with aplomb. And the story itself is great, even if it leaves you wanting more.
Robert A. Heinlein is one of the three gods of science fiction. His writing lends credit to that sentiment. Sure some might find his liberal ideas a bit too liberal and sure he might ruffle a few feathers but he writes very well and is a man whose opinion I have come to respect after reading his books! A must read for everybody, and since there is not much of a language barrier it can be read by anybody too!
