THE STORY SO FAR

Still reminiscing the opening ceremony on 3rd october in their hearts, the indian contingent began their medal haul but narrowly missed on the golds. There were 8 gold medals at stake on the opening day of games. Australia showed their dominance yesterday in swimming by overhauling 4 golds. Yesterday was not a very good one for india in terms of medals won at CWG.

For India, Soniya Chanu and Sukhen Dey won the silver medal, and V Srinivas Rao and Sandhya Rani won the bronze in weight lifting. The most tragic moment came when Soniya Chanu, the Manipuri weightlifter lost to a 17 year old Nigerian school girl Augustina Nwaokola. Soniya Chanu was inconsolable and she also apologized in front of the media for loosing on gold.

V Srinivas Rao, the army man, was not very happy either, even after winning bronze. His complaint was the minimal audience present to cheer the Indian weightlifters. This is a very sad fact that though the opening day saw a crowd of 60,000 people, not even 10% of them were present to watch the events.

India has kick started its claim to win 100 medals this time with panache. Today 18 golds were at stake, and India has made a comeback in the medals tally by winning all 3 golds in the men’s wrestling competition. Also, Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang maintained their favorite status and won golds in 10m shooting. 2 Silver were also captured in the mens 50m rifle shooting. Women shooters also made india proud by winning 2 golds and 2 silvers in shooting.  Overall, today was a good day for Indian sportsmen. I hope they continue this form tomorrow also. The world is watching, com’on india dikhade!
