The War of The Worlds : Review

So here we are, another week, and I have my no.19 book up for review.

The War of The Worlds by H.G.Wells

The War of The Worlds by H.G.WellsIt’s a classic all right, first published in 1898 The War of The Worlds is a book par excellence. This is also one of the earliest books I have read. Before you guys remember fondly the 2005 movie version of this book, think again. This book was published in 1898. Back then, H.G. Wells showed how one of the Tripods could be taken out by well placed grenade. There were no fancy shields or anything else. Let’s just say that if the Tripods from the book had arrived a 100 years later they would all soon be fodder for lab experiments!

Ah what a difference a 100 years make! So here we are with the book review. Now this book is old, so the terminology and the technological achievements mentioned here are obviously old. This is not sci-fi anymore, this is just fi now. Fiction i.e. But it still deserves it’s spot on the list for a very good reason. This book paved the way for even more revolutionary science fiction works, some of which I will mention in my list as well.

About the book now, after a brief introduction the narrative begins with scenes from Mars. This is particularly impressive as the missions were reported as those after a gunshot. Now I don’t know about you but this in itself was a revolutionary method of transportation. Instead of rockets with fuel send them to space with a giant gun! Anyways, so the story then is about the invading martians and is told through the eyes of the narrator who is fleeing for safety with his wife. The martians then begin to kill every moving object, of course aliens tend to do that as we have learned. And this is how the story progresses.

Now there is more to it of course and I might have sounded a little callous above but all this is part of my act. This is an amazing book, it really is. But it hasn’t aged well. We have moved on since then and as I mentioned above, the aliens would be toast if they had invaded a 100 years later.

  1. It hasn’t aged well – now I’m totally not looking forward to reading this over the summer. The reading list my teacher gave me actually ahs another HG Wells novel, The Time Machine, listed as well and I hope that one isn’t as dated as this one appears. An AM radio show my follows here in Chicago, The Book Report, is actually reviewing this book on Saturday afternoon and I think I might listen in as well. I’m not really into these radio talk shows actually, but my mom constantly listens and from what I’ve heard of it, the host sounds pretty knowledgable. What even better is if I miss the show this week, I can apparently just stream it directly from The BookReport’s website.

    • The Time Machine is a superb work. I would recommend it! The reason this one didn’t age well and The Time Machine did is simple, tis was a contemporary work while Time Machine was very futuristic. It still holds true for it and reading it is a lot of fun!
