Food today has become more than a thing to satiate our hunger. It’s more of social phenomena; in a way the next thing that can stir up the society after money is food. One can see food as a contentious topic in every house. Children want this veggie; parents wanting that veggie on the dinner table and then the grand elders have their own cuisines. And in most cases someone or other is left vying and sulking. And fuelling the food feud are the snacks with one side brimmed with burgers, fries and all that western stuffs and the other side relying on tea with biscuits and house made fritters. Lo and behold; the generation gap sprouts up here.
Is it all? Is it over with the food fight? No; not so early. Apart from this eastern-western, younger-older food controversies we have this famous veg. and non-veg. groups. And this food category holds its roots back in ancient time. And this hot-potato is omnipresent. For some people this particular topic is at the extremities of social living (no offence intended for anyone here) but, indubitably I have seen people who won’t even talk to someone who love chicken. The reason to this behaviour shouldn’t be debated here but the effect of what we eat is evident here. What we are talking about here is not the values and beliefs of people but the impact of food on our society. There are now even separate food chambers for different tastes in weddings; ironically at a place where two souls are united hundreds are divided on eating habits; on food.
And suppose in one such wedding you tells your vegetarian wife to wait while you go around and devour upon the chicken pieces on the other side. And then it’s been around an hour since you left. And if on your return you see your wife ball dancing with your friend on a romantic tone being played; you think your chicken made you a chicken. And you should see your frown then!!
And then there are the sororities where you can find ladies chatting about…ahem-ahem…one of the most important topic-food!!
“Oh do you know that almond and walnut can really make the curves seductive.”
Or
“Last night I tried chocolate and honey as our libido boosters.”
Great!!! Even bedtime rituals are governed by what we eat.
And how on earth can we forget about the drinks, tea and coffee-the all time favourite beverages. They are like our heart-beats. If you don’t serve tea your guests, you feel like it’s one of the worst things you’ve ever done. Then we have wines that break and make our relations. It’s weird you drink them on both occasions-whenever you are too sad and too glad. It seems like humans can’t handle any of the two.
There was this writer who wrote, “Tell me what you eat and I’ll tell you what you are”. After seeing around myself today; seeing people making friends and foes on eat outs, dinners, it seems like the writer’s words did have some truth after all.
